CHAPTER 8

Over the course of the next few days I went downhill and I went downhill quick. My ass should have stayed in the hospital, because this at home shit wasn’t going to get it. I was in so much pain, my boobs were so swollen that I had to stop breastfeeding the baby. Velma had to go out and get some milk so that she could take over feeding the baby and I could get some rest.

I was laying in the bed sleeping one night when Derrick came in. Velma told me that they were getting ready to go on tour in about two weeks and she would be staying up here with me and the kids until the baby got older. The baby was sleeping in a little bassinet next to the bed that somebody had gotten. I didn’t even know who it was, but I just know that it was here.

Derrick walked over to the bassinet and picked up the baby. I sucked my teeth because he was always doing that shit. Picking him up and waking him and then handing him to me when the baby started crying. I turned my back to him. I didn’t even want to look at him right now.

Derrick was lucky that I was still here because I had begun preparing to leave. The only thing that stopped me was Velma. She knew it. She said that she could see it in my eyes and talked me into staying. Saying that Derrick was just stressed out because of the upcoming tour and having to be apart from his family again. She let me know that even as a young child when her and her husband had to go away for some business out of town, Derrick couldn’t handle it.

“How are you feeling?” his deep voice said. It was the first time that he really said anything directly to me. It was also the first time he asked me how I felt since I had the baby.

I didn’t even bother speaking to him. I heard him moving around in the room before I heard the baby make some kind of noise. I turned around and watched as Derrick laid our son in the bassinet. I turned around before he could see me looking at him.

I felt Derrick sit down on the bed. I closed my eyes because I didn’t want to acknowledge this man. He rubbed my back and I tried to scoot away from him, but everything was still sore. So I had to quickly abandon the idea of moving.

“Hey relax. You shouldn’t be moving around so much” he said laying down next to me. “Get away from me” I said slowly scooting over. I laid down on what was normally his side of the bed. I didn’t care where I was laying. I just wanted to be away from him.

I heard him get up and leave out of the room. Good, now maybe I could get some sleep. I was in the process of scooting back over to my side of the bed when he came back into the room.
